Menstrual Hygiene

In order for women, girls, and other menstruators to have an empowered, fulfilling life, good menstrual hygiene management (MHM) is essential. Many organizations are adopting a multi-sectoral, holistic approach to enhancing menstruation hygiene worldwide since the adverse effects of poor menstrual health and hygiene are cut across most areas. Menstrual health and hygiene requirements are not fulfilled due to gender inequality, discriminatory social norms, cultural taboos, poverty, and a lack of basic amenities like restrooms and sanitary products.

Many young women need to fully and accurately understand their menstrual cycle as a natural biological phenomenon. Before the start of their first period, boys and girls should be educated about menstruation. This will boost their self-esteem, foster social cohesion, and promote healthy practices. Menstrual hygiene is equally important as creating awareness regarding the same.

Girls and women are less likely to get infections when they have access to safe, inexpensive sanitary products to control their periods. However, poor menstrual hygiene can result in major health hazards such as reproductive and urinary tract infections, which can cause infertility in the future and complicate labor and delivery. After changing menstruation products, it's essential to wash your hands to prevent the spread of diseases like hepatitis B. According to studies, providing sanitary pads to girls significantly lowers the incidence of bacterial vaginosis and STDs. Overall sexual and reproductive health would be maintained, including reduced teen pregnancy and improved fertility.
